Resume Writing Tips
1.
Do not use a template
Resumes created by templates are easily
recognized by recruiters and give the
impression that the candidate did not put
enough effort into its construction.
Creating an original resume may take longer,
but will make all the difference.
2.
Make sure your resume is comprehensible -
use bullet points as opposed to paragraphs
to explain your experience
Recruiters only briefly look at resumes.
Therefore, if they have to search for
information they will quickly move onto the
next resume. Clearly and briefly state your
objective as well as all of your experience.
3.
List experience in one of two ways
A. Chronologically, starting with the most
recent experience.
B. Relevant experience at top of page, other
experience listed chronologically at the
bottom, starting from the most recent.
Using either of these examples will
highlight your most relevant achievements to
the position you are applying for and will
make you stand out.
4.
Proofread! Do not rely on spell check
Proofreading is one of the most powerful
tools you can utilize to make your resume
stand out. Hiring managers are aware of any
mistakes, which could ultimately lessen your
chances of acquiring the position. The more
professional your resume appears, the more
likely you are to get the job! Remember
spell check does not recognize the misuse of
words in sentences, so be careful and make
sure to proofread!
5.
If you can use one page for your resume,
great. If not, two pages are fine.
If your resume spills over onto two pages
with a few lines on the second page, play
around with the margins and spacing to get
it onto one page. It is better to have one
full page with strong content than two pages
with a lot of white space.
